Fairfield County

An interesting mix of traditional and modern, events and museums across the county offer many choices for residents and visitors alike. From a famous Civil War General’s birthplace and the polished chrome of motorcycles, to the annual county fair celebrating agriculture and eclectic mix of music and art at the Lancaster Festival each July, there’s much to do in Fairfield County. Downtown areas offer specialty shops and dining options, and scenic drives feature stops at points of interest for almost any taste.

Fairfield County is home to more original covered bridges than any other county in Ohio, and picturesque Rock Mill, built in 1824 and being painstakingly restored by the Historical Parks Commission, will someday have the only operating gristmill in the state. The large water wheel has already been installed and the covered bridge nearby is a popular spot for photos.

Friday Night Bandstand in downtown Lancaster each summer is another free event that draws hundreds of concertgoers, as does Pickerington’s Sunday Night Music Series in Sycamore Park. Both cities also host free outdoor movies during the summer for kids.

There are a growing number of local breweries throughout the county for those who like to sample craft brews, local festivals in many of the smaller communities, and a host of events celebrating the holidays as well. The annual county fair, nicknamed “The Last and Best in the State,” is held the second week of October and is the last fair in Ohio each year. The county’s rich heritage in agriculture is celebrated in this quintessential tradition.
